Gamela
UnreachedThe Gamela are an indigenous people of Brazil who live in the state of Maranhão, mainly in communities in the municipalities of Viana and Matinha, in the Amazonian region of Maranhão. Their presence in the region goes back centuries, and historical records place them, since the colonial period, in a vast area stretching from Caxias to the forests of former Maranhão villages and toward the region’s rivers.
Through intense contact with the surrounding society, beginning as early as the 18th century, the Gamela endured profound losses, displacements and a process of erosion of their identity. For a long time they came to be considered a vanished people, mistaken for the regional population. In recent years, however, communities have publicly reclaimed recognition of their origin and reaffirmed themselves as the Gamela people.
Today the Gamela number around 1,600 people. Their original language was largely lost over centuries of colonial pressure, and Portuguese became the daily language of the communities. Even so, a memory of belonging persists among them, along with a bond to the ancestral land and an effort to preserve their identity.

The Gamela live in rural, peasant based communities, sustaining themselves mainly through family farming, gathering, fishing and the use of the resources of the land and forests around them. Life is organized around families and communities, with strong ties of kinship and cooperation in work and in collective decisions.
One of the main challenges today is the dispute over their territory. Their traditional lands have suffered invasions and losses over the decades, and the communities continue seeking recognition and demarcation of their ancestral territories. This context brings tension, insecurity and threats, while at the same time strengthening among them cultural resistance and the affirmation of who they are.
The predominant religion among the Gamela is tied to their ethnic traditions, marked by a relationship with the land, with their ancestors and with elements of the nature surrounding their communities. Their traditional worldview values the sacred bond with the territory, the rivers and the forests, seen as an essential part of the life and identity of the people.
A Christian presence among them is practically nonexistent, and this remains a people still very little reached by the gospel. The message of Jesus Christ, in its fullness, remains largely unknown in the Gamela communities.
The Gamela lack a clear and faithful understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ, presented with respect for their culture and for their everyday language, Portuguese. Alongside this spiritual need there are also concrete needs: security in their territories, justice amid land conflicts, access to health care and education, and the strengthening of their communities. From a standpoint of intercession, it is necessary to cry out for God’s love to reach this people in a way that is understandable and transforming, and for doors to open for a humble, patient and respectful Christian witness.
