Kapu

The roots of the Kapu trace back to the post Kakatiya period in southern India, when farming communities of the Andhra coastal region organized into distinct groups. One of the main branches, the Telagas, descends from the chiefs of Velanadu, who ruled the Andhra coast between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries.

Over time, these cultivators also took on the role of warriors and commanders in Hindu kingdoms, serving as nayakas in the Vijayanagara empire. This dual calling, between farming and warfare, has shaped Kapu identity to this day, as the community spread from Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and other states of southern India.

Kapu life was born tied to the land: for generations, families farmed and managed agricultural holdings in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, sustaining entire villages from the harvest. This agrarian foundation still marks the people’s identity, even amid growing migration to cities like Hyderabad, where many today work in politics, industry, the arts, and Telugu language cinema.

Family honor and the reputation of one’s lineage remain central to everyday decisions, from marriages to social alliances. Traditional caste assemblies once helped resolve conflicts and maintain community cohesion in the villages, a custom that still echoes in how the Kapu organize themselves.

The Kapu are Hindu, their faith interwoven with caste identity and the honor of a lineage that traces back to the region’s ancient warriors and cultivators. Religious practice follows the rhythms of agrarian life and family celebrations, uniting personal devotion and social belonging into a single fabric.

Traditionally, caste assemblies helped uphold religious and social norms within Kapu communities, reinforcing the Hindu faith as an inseparable part of being Kapu. This fusion of religion and ethnic identity remains strong, even among those who now live in large cities, migrated to urban centers like Hyderabad, or pursued careers outside farming, in politics, the arts, and Telugu language cinema. For the vast majority of the Kapu, following Jesus remains a possibility almost entirely outside the community’s religious horizon.

Telugu, the heart language of the Kapu, has one of the oldest Bible translations in India, with records dating back to the nineteenth century and revisions continuing to this day. Bible apps, audio, and digital resources in Telugu are now widely available. Even so, for most Kapu the sacred text remains something distant from daily life, associated with another religious identity and rarely read or heard at home.

For the Kapu, Hindu identity is interwoven with the honor of the land, family, and caste: leaving that faith is seen as breaking with centuries of social belonging and with the standing won by warrior and farmer ancestors. The community’s prestige, now present also in politics and cinema, reinforces the weight of upholding religious tradition as a public mark of identity. This makes any step toward the gospel a decision that involves not only personal faith, but the whole network of clan relationships.

As in so many agrarian communities across India, Kapu families face the challenge of keeping the land productive amid rapid urbanization and competition for opportunities in the cities, a shift reshaping life in entire villages along the Andhra Pradesh coast. There is also a profoundly spiritual need: among millions of Kapu, there are practically no local Christian communities, discipleship, or living witness of the gospel in Telugu that honors their identity and history as a people. There is also a lack of those willing to walk closely with Kapu families and leaders, translating the gospel not only into words but into gestures that honor each one’s culture and lineage.
