Katokim
UnreachedThe Katokim are an indigenous people of Northeastern Brazil, linked to the mosaic of ethnic groups of the semi-arid backlands, a region marked by frequent droughts. Their history is shaped by the process of colonization: as early as the 18th century, when their village in what is now the state of Pernambuco was destroyed, they were forced to move to an area of caatinga scrubland, far from their original territories. This long path of loss and migration shaped the people’s identity and the memory they hold of themselves.
Today the Katokim number around 900 people. Over the centuries, pressure on their way of life led to the loss of their traditional language, and the people now communicate in Portuguese, a language they share with the surrounding society. Despite these losses, the awareness of belonging to an original people remains alive, and the ethnic group has sought to publicly reaffirm its indigenous identity.
In 2002 the Katokim took an important step toward reorganization, forming their own indigenous association under the leadership of a shaman and his daughter. This effort at organizing reflects their desire to be recognized, to secure rights, and to preserve what remains of their cultural heritage amid the challenges of the present.

Life for the Katokim is marked by the smallness of the land allotted to them and by the harshness of the semi-arid region. The available land has never been enough to sustain the people, which has pushed many families into becoming tenant farmers, squatters, and laborers subordinate to others. Poverty has driven part of the group to the outskirts of cities, in search of ways to survive as rural workers, domestic employees, and day laborers.
Despite the hardships, the people’s social organization rests on the leadership of traditional figures, such as the shaman, and on the kinship ties that sustain community life. The reorganization of the indigenous association has been a tool for demanding land, recognition, and policies that guarantee dignified living conditions. The main challenges today involve access to land, keeping families settled, and preserving cultural memory amid economic pressures and dispersion.
The predominant religion among the Katokim has ethnic and ancestral roots, passed down through generations and tied to the figure of the shaman, who holds a central place in the people’s spiritual life. This worldview understands the world as inhabited by spiritual forces and beings, and seeks, through traditional practices and the mediation of religious leaders, to maintain balance between the community, the land, and the unseen world.
In this context, the gospel of Jesus Christ is still little known among them. Although the Bible is available in Portuguese, the language the people speak, there is no record of an established Christian community among the Katokim, and the message of the Savior remains, for the most part, something distant from their spiritual daily life.
The needs of the Katokim are at once material and spiritual. On the practical level, they need enough land to live with dignity, conditions of livelihood that do not scatter their families, and recognition that upholds their rights. On the spiritual level, they need to know the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ, in a way that is respectful and sensitive to their history of loss and their identity as an original people.
